Seven Dreams Board of Directors enhance education for all students of the Robbinsdale Area Schools

The Seven Dreams Education Foundation has an Executive Director and a Board of Directors that includes parents, staff, alumni and members of the business and broader community, in addition to a School District Administration Liaison. The board governs and oversees the foundation, and assists with the leadership and general promotion of the Seven Dreams Education Foundation (SDEF) to support the foundation’s mission. Our board members volunteer their time, serve on board committees, and make a difference in the lives of our students!

Board of Directors Job Description

Purpose:  To advise, govern, oversee policy and direction, and assist with the leadership and general promotion of the Seven Dreams Education Foundation (SDEF) so as to support the organization’s mission and needs.

Major Responsibilities:

●      Represent and advocate on behalf of SDEF’s mission/purpose.

●      Actively serve on the Board and a SDEF committee to provide expertise and oversight.

●      Assist in raising funds for the various SDEF programs.

●      Ensure that the SDEF meets its fiduciary responsibilities.

●      Ensure effective strategic planning and implementation.

●      Communicate, on an ongoing basis, information necessary for effective governance.

●      Be creative, offer ideas and develop new ways to inspire others to get involved with the SDEF.

*Members of the board share these responsibilities while acting in the interest of Seven Dreams Education Foundation. Each member is expected to make recommendations based on his or her experience and vantage point in the community.

Length of term:   Three years

Meetings and Time Commitment:

●      Currently, the board of directors meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month, 5:30 pm at a location within Robbinsdale Area Schools (and by Zoom during the pandemic).  Meetings are 90 minutes.

●      Join a board committee that meets separately: Bird Bash, Sponsorship, Grants, Communications, Alumni, Finance and Executive Committee (for board officers).

●      Board members are also asked to attend special events or other meetings as your schedule allows.

Expectations of Board Members:

●      Maintain confidentiality.

●      Attend and participate in meetings on a regular basis, and special events.  Miss no more than three unexcused regular board meetings throughout the fiscal year (July-June).

●      Participate on a standing committee of the board, and serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary.

●      Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by Seven Dream Education Foundation mission, objectives, and programs.

●      Help communicate and promote Seven Dreams Education Foundation mission and programs to the community.

●      Understand Seven Dreams Education Foundation finances, budget, and financial/resource needs.

●      Understand the policies and procedures of Seven Dreams Education Foundation.

●      Financially support Seven Dreams Education Foundation in a manner commensurate with one’s ability.

Board of Directors 2023-24

Board Committees

Executive Committee, chair Richard Gentner. Members include the Executive Director, officers, and past president. The committee guides the work of the foundation and plans Board agendas.

Bird Bash Committee Plan and coordinate annual signature “gala” event. Solicit donations and sponsors. Recruit volunteers. Work with district and local media to promote. Non-board members are welcome and encouraged to join as co-chairs or sub-committee members.

Communications Committee, chair Dave Kiser. Provide marketing and outreach of the foundation to the community, schools, businesses and general public.

Grants Committee Oversee Hands-on Learning Grants and Bird Bash “Fund-a-Need” initiative. Evaluate applications and select grant recipients, subject to board approval.

Sponsorship Committee Secure individual, business and community sponsors for the Bird Bash and other events and projects. Establish goals and targets for the year, and help train the board in fund raising methods.

Alumni Relations Committee Develop relationships with RAS alumni to help connect them to the district and the foundation. Encourage making class gifts or donations to SDEF. Build a database of RAS alumni, assist with class reunions and events.

Finance Committee is planned. Other than the Executive Committee and Grants Committee, non-board members are welcome to join the committees.
